Develop The Leader Within You

During this one-week intensive program, you will engage in a series of integrated lectures and public speaking workshops, and activities. Through this program, you will identify your personal leadership strengths and style, enhance critical thinking skills, and hone in on communication skills.

Final student presentations address individual leadership development, theory, and applications. 

Students will:

  • Analyze and discuss their own behavior in group problem-solving challenges
  • Define emotional, social, and cultural intelligence and their impact on effective leadership
  • Describe concepts, theoretical perspectives, and current trends in organizational leadership
  • Apply critical thinking skills to evaluate ethical dilemmas that leaders face
  • Make engaging, informative oral presentations with confidence
  • Reflect upon and share their own leadership development

Program Overview

What is the Building Leadership Strategies Academy?

A residential, in-person summer program for pre-college students to learn and develop personal leadership and communication skills

Who can apply?

High school students completing their sophomore and junior year, ages 16 to 18 by Summer 2025

When is the Building Leadership Strategies Academy?

Two one-week sessions will run for students to choose between

Session I: Sunday, July 13 to Saturday, July 19, 2025
Session II: Sunday, July 27 to Saturday, August 2, 2025

Where will the Building Leadership Strategies Academy take place?

Students will attend classes, eat meals, engage in activities, and reside in a dorm on the Rutgers–New Brunswick campus in New Jersey

Do students earn credit for the Building Leaderships Strategies Academy?

All students will earn 1.5 college credits upon completion of the leadership academy.

Academy students will attend daily academic workshops, lectures, tours, and activities, taught by Rutgers faculty and supervised by program assistants (PAs), and resident assistants (RAs).

Protection of Minors

The University has adopted a Protection of Minors Policy to promote the well-being and safety of minors who participate in programs or activities run by or associated with Rutgers. The policy includes requirements relating to reporting suspected abuse or neglect of minors, completing relevant online training, and undergoing background checks for Authorized Adults and people in Direct Contact Positions as defined by the policy.
